چکیده
Septic arthritis continues to be a major medical problem for metropolitan hospitals. Previous studies have defined risk factors, joint distribution, and the most common organisms implicated in this condition (1-4). Recently, we became aware of a pattern of septic arthritis that differed significantly from that previously reported. Over a 2-year period, a retrospective analysis of septic arthritis revealed the emergence of a new pattern of antibiotic resistance among the bacteria populating a well-defined subgroup of patients. Patients and methods. Wayne County General Hospital, a 270-bed general hospital in suburban Detroit, has continuously served indigent citizens of the inner city of Detroit and the population of the surrounding area since the turn of the century. A review of the hospital’s records for the 2-year period, January 1, 1981 through December 31, 1982, showed 46 patients with a discharge diagnosis of septic arthritis, excluding all cases of Neisseria gonorrhea. These patients’ medical records, including their bacteriology laboratory data, were reviewed for inclusion in the study. Criteria for inclusion were: presentation with an acutely painful, tender, or swollen joint and positive synovial fluid bacterial cultures. Of the 46 medical

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus septic arthritis
Objective: We investigated the clinical characteristics, treatment patterns and outcomes of community-acquired methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) septic arthritis. Methods: This was a retrospective chart review of CA-MRSA septic arthritis in a tertiary care hospital from 2000-2013. We compared CA-MRSA septic arthritis cases with HA-MRSA septic arthritis cases to identify impo...
متن کاملSeptic arthritis in intravenous drug abusers: a historical comparison of habits and pathogens.
BACKGROUND Intravenous drug abuse (IVDA) is a common problem; there were more than 16 million users worldwide in 2008. Numerous reports highlight the infectious skeletal complication associated with IVDA. OBJECTIVE To determine septic arthritis pathogens in IVDA in a U.S. hospital and compare the current causative organisms to a cohort from the 1980s at the same institution. METHODS An inst...
متن کاملAn unexpected diagnosis of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus septic arthritis
Hand infections can result in serious tissue damage and gross functional impairment. This is particularly true in the case of septic arthritis, the most destructive of all joint disease. We report the first case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus septic arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint to have occurred in a patient devoid of all risk factors traditionally associated wit...

High Prevalence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus among Patients with Septic Arthritis Caused by Staphylococcus aureus
BACKGROUND This study investigated the clinical characteristics of patients with septic arthritis caused by Staphylococcus aureus and tried to identify the risk factors for methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) arthritis. METHODS Between January 2008 and December 2011, patients with septic arthritis caused by S. aureus were identified from the computerized databases of a regional hospital an...
